Danny Tauroa is the Director of Sport and a Physical Education teacher at GEMS World Academy. Danny joined GEMS in August of 2016. His role here focuses on developing the sporting program so that it is sustainable and provides opportunities for our students to grow through sport. Danny heads the GEMS Rugby 7s Academy and GEMS Performance Athlete Program that provide opportunities for our aspiring athletes to learn what is required to reach the top in sport.
He has over 17 years teaching experience starting in New Zealand before beginning an international teaching career in China and then landing here in Singapore for the past 14 years. Danny has a Bachelor of Teaching from Waikato University and at his previous international school, was the Head of Physical Education for High school. He has experience in implementing a PHE curriculum that focuses on developing lifelong learners that understand the value of leading active healthy lifestyles.
Danny has been involved in sport his whole life and represented New Zealand in volleyball and his province in rugby. His philosophy is that sport allows young people to learn about themselves - their character, strengths and weaknesses and develop the essential ‘soft skills’ that are so important to young people. Skills like respect, communication, teamwork, discipline, commitment and understanding the work that is required to be successful at something. Danny coached the Singapore National Men’s and Women’s rugby teams between 2007 and 2014 taking the men to the highest level in Asia during the 2009 season. He has also featured as a television studio commentator for Fox Sport Asia during the most recent two Rugby World Cup tournaments.
