Mark Petterson

Mark Petterson is the Deputy Principal of the Secondary Years (Pastoral Care Grades 6-12) and joined GEMS World Academy (Singapore) in August 2016. Mark brings with him more than a decade of expertise in educational leadership, counselling and teaching across the middle and senior years of schooling.

Prior to GEMS, Mark held the position of Deputy Principal within an Australian co-educational secondary school where his primary remit was to lead school improvement by overseeing teaching and learning. Additionally, Mark has held numerous management positions in education ranging from Assistant Director to Guidance Counsellor. Mark is also a specialised Mathematics and Science teacher, having taught students across Australia and in Singapore.

Holding a Master of Educational Studies (Guidance and Counselling) from The University of Queensland in Australia, Mark has spent many years working in student advocacy roles where he has developed an in-depth understanding of the social and emotional support needed for students during the secondary years of study. Mark is an advocate for schools promoting safeguarding and child protection practices and as such has led numerous workshops as a means to provide visibility into this important matter. Furthermore, Mark holds two undergraduate degrees from The University of Queensland, Australia which include a Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling), and a Bachelor of Social Science (Communication and Public Relations). Mark was also recognized as a contributor to Australian university publications focusing on adult learning and support during the tertiary years of study.

Being a passionate IB educator, Mark believes in striving for new, innovative ways to improve learning for students. He also strongly believes in the importance of all students embracing the IB values of action and service whereby they can demonstrate a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Mark's own volunteering at non-profit organisations has included the role of a counsellor at a youth advocacy centre and as a telephone counsellor for the Salvation Army.  

Born in the United Kingdom and growing up in Australia, Mark is an avid football fan, a keen golfer, and spends his free time traveling the world with his wife, Louisa.
